It was with great pleasure that Bishop Marcus ordained John Walsh to the Permanent Diaconate on Saturday 21st March. Thanking Bishop Marcus, Monsignor David Smith, the Parish priest at St Mary's, said that St Mary's had witnessed many ordinations to the priesthood but as far as he knew this was the first ordination there of a Permanent Deacon. Deacon John was surrounded by the love of his wife, Caroline, his family, and most movingly his mother, who had managed to travel from Ireland to be with her son. Many of his now brother deacons; priests from the Deanery and beyond, friends, and parishioners from St Mary's were also there to support him with their prayers and presence.

The Bishop spoke of how both priests and deacons share in different ways in the ministry of the Bishop but emphasised particularly the ministry of service for a deacon in imitation of the Lord who said, he had come to serve and not to be served. Whilst recognising what deacons ‘do,' Bishop Marcus reflected on the more important question of who they were and what they represent.

In his final remarks the Bishop encouraged others, who felt they might have a vocation to service in the Diaconate, to explore this possibility further.

After what was a very moving Mass with in so many ways, not least the music and singing, everyone retired to the Catholic Club for refreshments and an opportunity to congratulate John. As someone there said, ‘The work begins now.'
