By its very nature the celebration of the Mass on Maundy Thursday is less flamboyant than that of the Chrism Mass on Wednesday, and so it was in the Cathedral - gone were the fanfare of trumpets and the Massed choirs from across the Diocese - this celebration was a more homely affair , but still with the Bishop and the choral scholars. The Cathedral itself was still full though not crowded. Most people there seemed to have come to celebrate this particular event - though some did just drop by to say a prayer before they went out for the night.

The Bishop in his Homily explained the meaning of the night's celebration - namely that it was the commemoration not only of the Last Supper , but also the remembering of the institution of the Eucharist and the Priesthood. He explained that the Gospel that we had listened to gave us a new command - that of Love - that the washing of the feet demonstrated who we are and what we are as Christians - this act, he said, changes us there is a bond established one of living unity- we are no longer servants but friends.

He also put into context the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and the dramatic stripping of the altar at the end of the celebration. The Church remembers how it was left desolate by the death of Jesus - the scene is set for Easter.
