Rite of Election
On the First Sunday of Lent, 5 March, 2017, candidates from across the Diocese of Leeds came to St Anne, Cathedral, Leeds. They were about to take part in a very special celebration, The Rite of Election.
The Rite of Election is part of the R.C.I.A. (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) process. People who wish to become Catholics, have already spent some time preparing and studying the catholic faith in their own parishes. now they come with their parish priests, their sponsors and their catechists to meet Right Reverend Marcus Nigel Stock, MA, STL, Tenth Bishop of Leeds and to express publicly their intention to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church. In recognition of their commitment their names are enrolled in the Book of the Elect.
Canon Timothy Swinglehurst assisted the Bishop in welcoming the catechumens as they inscribed their names in the Book of the Elect. Canon Swinglehurst is the Diocese of Leeds’s newest Honorary Canon. He had been installed earlier that week by Provost John Aveyard in a Mass at St Patrick’s, Huddersfield, concelebrated by the Provost and the Parish Priest, Canon Ian Smith.
