Celebration of Priesthood 2014 Jubilarians – Leeds Cathedral

Thursday, 12th June was the day chosen, this year, for the Celebration of Priesthood – this being the day, 60 years ago, Bishop David was ordained. Along with 13 of his fellow Jubilarians they all gathered in the Cathedral for a Mass of thanksgiving.

The Celebration was led by Cardinal Cormac Murphy O’Connor who was joined by 13 Bishops, 3 Archbishops and 80 fellow clergy. The Administrator of  the Diocese, Mgr John Wilson welcomed everyone to the Cathedral and expressed the thanks of the Diocese to the Jubilarians for 750 years of service they had given.  The ‘Star’ being Mgr Bernard Doyle who was celebrating 70 years of  work – and still going strong!

Gratitude and thanksgiving were the themes taken up by the Cardinal in his homily. In his normal way the Cardinal used his art of story-telling to pass on his thanks for the work done by these men and to point out how they had ‘..come to do his will…’ All that they had done, he said, they would never know because they touched people and moved people without they themselves being aware of it. They had come together on this day, he said, to celebrate Trust and Faithfulness and for people to acknowledge their service in the Field.

Though it was a small gathering in the Cathedral all that were there agreed that it was a ‘Fitting and Right Service ..’ to celebrate so many years of giving.
